Levchenko, Serhii

Levchenko, Serhii [Левченко, Сергій; Levčenko, Serhij], b 19 October 1902 in Nezamozhne, Chernihiv gubernia, d 24 June 1969 in Kyiv. Linguist and lexicographer. Levchenko studied at the Chernihiv Institute of People's Education and the Kharkiv branch of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. After the Second World War he was appointed a lecturer at Kyiv University and a senior research associate of the Institute of Linguistics. He wrote a candidate’s dissertation on the language of Oleksander Korniichuk (1947) and a course on Ukrainian phonetics (1955), contributed to several dictionaries and reference works, and coedited the last four volumes of the six-volume Ukrainian-Russian dictionary (1953–63).
