Narodna volia
Narodna volia («Народна воля»; Popular Will). An organ of the Ukrainian Fraternal Association (UFA), published from June 1911. Preceded by the newspaper Shershen’ (est 1909), it appeared weekly until 1914 and then two or three times a week before again becoming a weekly in 1942; in 2007 it started appearing monthly. Until 1913, when the paper moved to Scranton, it was published in Olyphant, Pennsylvania. Initially Narodna volia had a strong socialist orientation and generally supported the positions of the Ukrainian Radical party in Western Ukraine. After the Second World War, however, the paper moved, along with the UFA, toward the mainstream of Ukrainian national political life. It contained articles on political affairs, on cultural and historical topics, and on Ukrainian life in the United States of America and elsewhere, as well as reports on the activities of the UFA. The first editor of Narodna volia was Ye. Hvozdyk. He was succeeded by O. Kosovy, Ivan Ardan, Myroslaw Stechishin, D. Borysko, Mykola Repen, Yaroslav Chyzh (1924–42, at times as head of an editorial board), Mykola Tsehlynsky, Volodymyr Lototsky, D. Korbutiak, Marko Hundiak, Matvii Stakhiv (1949–71), V. Verhun, Ivan Smolii, R. Rychok, V. Polishchuk, and finally M. Dupliak (1987–2007). From 1947 the paper included an English-language section, The Fraternal Voice, which was edited for many years by J. Pronko. It also published an annual almanac. Narodna volia ceased publication in 2007.
