Ordassy-Baransky, Carlotta

Ordassy-Baransky, Carlotta, b 2 May 1921 in Budapest, d 11 October 2006 in Cortland, New York State, USA. Opera singer (soprano). She studied music at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and at the La Scala School for Young Artists in Milan (under G. Cigna). She debuted as Second Lady in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at La Scala and continued singing there under W. Furtwüangler. In 1950 she moved to New York, where she sang in the Metropolitan Opera as a soloist (1955–77) and as a guest soloist with the Dumka choir. She also performed in Salzburg under Herbert von Karajan and recorded Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre with him and Das Rheingold with Leopold Stokowski.
