Sharleman, Mykola

Sharleman, Mykola [Шарлемань, Микола; Šarleman'; Charlemagne], b 12 February 1887 in Kremenchuk, Poltava gubernia, d 29 April 1970 in Kyiv. Zoologist; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1929. He worked at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1919–41) and was one of the founders of its zoological museum. A specialist in zoogeography and ornithology, he wrote Slovnyk zoolohichnoï nomenkliatury (A Dictionary of Zoological Nomenclature, 2 vols, 1927), Ptakhy Ukraïny (The Birds of Ukraine, 1938), and a monograph about Slovo o polku Ihorevi as a source for the natural history of Kyivan Rus’.
