Vazhynsky, Porfyrii

Vazhynsky, Porfyrii or Skarbek-Vazhynsky [Важинський, Порфирій; Važyns'kyj, Porfyrij], b 5 August 1732 in Ashmiany, near Vilnius, d 9 March 1804 in Kholm. Uniate bishop. He studied in Rome before becoming a professor of philosophy in Polatsk and then rector of Basilian schools in Buchach and Volodymyr-Volynskyi. He was proto-archimandrite of the Basilian monastic order in 1772–80 and 1788–89, and was consecrated bishop of Kholm (see Kholm eparchy) in 1789. As bishop he was active in the efforts to revive Halych metropoly.
