Dovzhenko, Valeriian [Довженко, Валеріян; Dovženko, Valerijan], b 27 September 1905 in Rostov-na-Donu, d 5 January 1995 in Kyiv. Music scholar and composer. He graduated in 1931 from the Kharkiv Music and Drama Institute and lectured at the Kyiv Conservatory, where in 1972 he was promoted to the rank of professor. Among his published works are monographs on Viktor Kosenko (1951) and Pavlo Nishchynsky (1955) as well as Narysy z istoriï ukraïns'koï radians'koï muzyky (Essays on the History of Soviet Ukrainian Music, 2 vols, Kyiv 1957–65). He composed music for piano, violin, and cello, as well as choral music and art songs.
