Lysenko, Mykhailo [Лисенко, Михайло], b 29 October 1906 in Shpylivka, Sumy county, Kharkiv gubernia, d 8 May 1972 in Kyiv. Sculptor; full member of the USSR Academy of Arts from 1970. He studied at the Kharkiv Art Institute (1926–31) and taught there (1938–41) and at the Kyiv State Art Institute (1944–72). He executed many sculptural portraits, monuments, and socialist-realist compositions, usually in collaboration with others. They include the high reliefs Heroism of the Civil War and Heroism of Socialist Construction for the USSR pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair; the compositions China Rises Up (1933), Partisan Raid (1947), and Loyalty (1947); monuments to Sydir Kovpak (1971), Vladimir Lenin (1964), Mykola Shchors (1954), and other Bolshevik leaders, in various towns; the memorial complex at the Kholm Slavy military cemetery in Lviv (1958); and the Babyn Yar memorial in Kyiv (1976). Books about him were published in Kyiv in 1958 and 1975.
