Shalia, Ivan [Шаля, Іван; Šalja], b 9 April 1893 in Zhurakhivka, Pereiaslav county, Poltava gubernia, d ? Linguist. A graduate of Petrograd University (1916), he was a school inspector in Pereiaslav and Kyiv and a lecturer at the Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1920–6) and the Kuban Pedagogical Institute (1926–33). With Petro Horetsky he cowrote the best and most widely used Ukrainian language textbook of the 1920s (8 edns, 1926–9). When Ukrainian institutions in the Kuban were shut down in 1933 during the Stalinist terror, Shalia was arrested; he probably perished in a concentration camp.
