Bohuslav [Богуслав]. Map: IV-11. City (2011 pop 16,810) on the Ros River in the Dnipro Upland; a raion center in Kyiv oblast. The city was known in 1195 as a defense post on the southern border of Kyivan Rus’; from 1685 to 1712 it was the center of the Bohuslav regiment. From 1796 to 1837 it was a county center in Kyiv gubernia. In the late 19th and early 20th century it had many merchants and artisans; its population was 11,200 in 1860 and 16,000 in 1897. It has a fabric factory; a crafts factory, which was founded at the end of the 19th century and which manufactured decorative tapestries (eg, the ‘Bohuslav’ tapestry, with folk motifs); a furniture factory; a food industry; and a building-materials industry. Bohuslav also has a music school, a regional historical museum, and memorial museums dedicated to the artist Ivan Soshenko and writer Marko Vovchok.
