Kachmar, Vasyl

Kachmar, Vasyl [Качмар, Василь; Kačmar, Vasyl'], b 20 August 1904 in Viisko, Dobromyl county, Galicia, d 28 July 1992 in Newark, New Jersey. Journalist, Catholic activist, and member of the Ukrainian Military Organization and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. He was imprisoned in the Polish penal camp Bereza Kartuzka for his political activities. He served as an editor for Ukraïns’kyi holos (Peremyshl) in Peremyshl (1930–2), the newspaper Nash prapor in Lviv (1936–9), and Krakivs’ki visti in Cracow (1939–40). After the Second World War he immigrated to Germany and in 1949 to the United States. In the mid-1960s he was a founder and the first chairman of the Ukrainian Patriarchal Society in the United States. Kachmar wrote many articles and brochures on religious subjects.
