Kalynovych, Mykhailo

Kalynovych, Mykhailo [Калинович, Михайло; Kalynovyč, Myxajlo], b 13 October 1888 in Zhakhnivka, Bratslav county, Podilia gubernia, d 16 January 1949 in Kyiv. Linguist; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1939. A graduate of Kyiv University (1912) and professor there from 1916, he also worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1924, serving as director from 1939 to 1941. He published works in general linguistics, including Vstup do movoznavstva (Introduction to Linguistics, 1939; 2nd edn, 1947), studies of modern French literature, and translations from Sanskrit. He also served as the editor in chief of a Russian-Ukrainian dictionary (80,000 words, 1948) compiled in the official spirit of Russification.
