Kernytsky, Ivan M.

Kernytsky, Ivan M. [Керницький, Іван; Kernyc'kyj], b 30 September 1909 in Hai, Lviv county, Galicia, d 9 April 1979 in Lviv. Ukrainian linguist. A research associate of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR specializing in Middle Ukrainian, he devoted his attention particularly to the morphology of the 16th-century Ukrainian language. He is the author of numerous articles in this field and a monograph, Systema slovozminy v ukraïns'kii movi na materialakh pamiatok XVI v. (The Inflectional System of Ukrainian Based on the Materials of 16th-Century Monuments, 1967). He also studied the Lemko dialects and published Lemko texts from the 16th and 17th centuries in Akty sela Odrekhova (Documents of the Village of Odrekhiv, 1970). He was coeditor of Slovnyk staroukraïns'koï movy XIV–XV st. (Dictionary of Old Ukrainian of the 14th–15th Centuries, 1977–8).
