Kniazhevych, Dmytro

Kniazhevych, Dmytro [Княжевич, Дмитро; Knjaževyč], b 6 May 1788 in Saint Petersburg, d 13 October 1844 in Velyka Buromka, Zolotonosha county, Poltava gubernia. Prominent figure in educational and cultural affairs. From 1802 he held various government positions at home and abroad, and in 1837 he became a trustee of the Odesa school district, assisting in the reorganization and expansion of the Richelieu Lyceum. He founded (1839) and headed the Odesa Society of History and Antiquities and was editor of Zapiski Imperatorskogo Odesskogo obshchestva istorii i drevnostei. In addition to writing many works on philology, literature, agriculture, education, and history, he headed archeological explorations on the Black Sea coast.
