Kokorudz, Illia

Kokorudz, Illia, b 31 July 1857 in Yavoriv, Galicia, d 2 June 1933. Educator, philologist, and specialist in Ukrainian language and literature. Kokorudz was the director of the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv (1911–27), where he taught from 1896. He was also head of the Ridna Shkola society and one of its benefactors. During the First World War he organized courses for Ukrainian students in Vienna, and after the war he headed the Ukrainska Besida Theater. He wrote several articles on Classical culture, pedagogy, and the history of Ukrainian literature (in particular, on Taras Shevchenko, Markiian Shashkevych, Omelian Ohonovsky, and Old-Ukrainian legal texts).
