Koperzhynska, Nonna

Koperzhynska, Nonna [Копержинська, Нонна; Koperžyns'ka], b 1 May 1920 in Kyiv, d 10 June 1999 in Kyiv. Character actress; daughter of Kostiantyn Koperzhynsky. A graduate of the Kyiv Institute of Theater Arts (1941), from 1946 she has worked in the Kyiv Ukrainian Drama Theater. Her main roles included Vustia Shurai in Mykhailo Starytsky’s Oi ne khody, Hrytsiu, ta i na vechornytsi (Don’t Go to the Party, Hryts) and Stepanyda in his Ne sudylos' (It Was Not Fated), Hanna in Ivan Tobilevych’s Beztalanna (The Hapless Woman), Nastia in Mykola Kulish’s Patetychna Sonata (Sonata Pathétique), Varvara in Oleksander Korniichuk’s Kryla (Wings), and Claire Zachanassian in Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s Der Besuch der alten Dame. She appeared also in films; eg, in Dolia Maryny (Maryna’s Fate, an adaptation of Taras Shevchenko’s poem), Ukradene shchastia (Stolen Happiness, an adaptation of Ivan Franko’s play), and Za dvoma zaitsiamy (Chasing Two Hares, an adaptation of M. Starytsky’s play).
