Zakhidnia Ukraïna

Zakhidnia Ukraïna («Західня Україна»; Western Ukraine). A magazine dealing with art, literature, politics, and community news in Kharkiv. It was published irregularly from 1928 and monthly from 1930 to 1933. It was the official organ of the literary organization Zakhidnia Ukraina and was edited by Vasyl Atamaniuk, who was followed by Myroslav Irchan, Ivan Tkachuk, Volodymyr Gzhytsky, Y. Zazuliak, and Dmytro Zahul. The magazine included sections dedicated to poetry, literary prose, art and literary criticism, articles on sociopolitical issues, reviews, and chronicle of events The contributors, primarily members of the organization, wanted ‘to emphasize the proletarian class direction and to relay the class struggle of workers in Western Ukraine in their works.’ The magazine’s illustrators were Vasyl Kasiian, Borys Kriukov, and Yakiv Strukhmanchuk.
