Zhabokrytsky, Denys Dionysii

Zhabokrytsky, Denys Dionysii [Жабокрицький, Денис Діонісій; Žabokryc'kyj], b 1652, d 1715 in Moscow. Uniate bishop. He was nominated as Orthodox bishop of Lutsk (see Lutsk eparchy) by King Jan III Sobieski in 1695 and consecrated by the bishop of Maramureş region, Yosyp Stoika, in 1696. In 1702 he joined the Uniate church and was reconsecrated by Metropolitan Lev Zalensky. Tsar Peter I had him arrested and exiled in 1709, first to Kyiv and then to Moscow, where he died in prison. S. Kurganovich published a study of him in Kyiv in 1914.
