Halyn, Martyrii [Галин, Мартирій], b 1858 in Gura Rosha (now Kozatske), Odesa county, Kherson gubernia, d 1943 in Bessarabia. Physician; civic leader. Halyn was a medical officer in the Russian army before joining the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic during Ukraine’s struggle for independence (1917–20). A member of the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kyiv, he supervised its work in the area of medical terminology. During the Hetman government of 1918, he was the director of the Terminology Commission of the Ministry of Public Health. In 1920 he emigrated to Romania. He is the author of Rosiis'ko-ukraïns'kyi medychnyi slovnyk (Russian-Ukrainian Medical Dictionary, 1920) and Medychnyi latyns'ko-ukraïns'kyi slovnyk (Medical Latin-Ukrainian Dictionary, 1926, coedited with Borys Matiushenko). He also wrote memoirs (published in the journal Za derzhavnist’ and separately) and a number of works on surgery.
