Paneiko, Oleksander

Paneiko, Oleksander [Панейко, Олександер; Panejko], b 31 May 1891 in Zolochiv, Galicia, d 4 February 1950 in Munich, West Germany. Galician pedagogue; brother of Vasyl Paneiko and Yurii Paneiko. He taught Ukrainian language and shorthand at the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv and Ukrainian trade schools in Lviv (1912–14, 1916–25, 1928–39, 1941–2) and at gymnasiums in Kolomyia (1925) and Ternopil (1925–8). During the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine he taught at Lviv University (1940–1), and during the German occupation he edited a column about language in the paper L’vivs’ki visti (1943). A member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society’s Language Commission, he wrote the first Ukrainian stenography textbook (1922; based on the Gabelsberger shorthand system), edited Ukrainian textbooks, and prepared a revised edition of Ovsii Iziumov’s Ukrainian orthographic dictionary (1941) that included Western Ukrainian dialectal words. His Ukrainian grammar textbook (1950) was based on Oleksa Syniavsky’s language norms and Polish grammatical traditions.
