Hykavy, Onufrii

Hykavy, Onufrii [Гикавий, Онуфрій; Hykavyj], b 1885 in Peremyliv, Husiatyn county, Galicia, d 4 May 1945 in Winnipeg. Teacher, journalist, and community leader. Hykavy emigrated to Canada in 1902 and became a Ukrainian bilingual teacher in rural Manitoba (1907–13) (see Ukrainian bilingual education). In 1910 he published Zbirnyk baiok (Collection of Tales), one of the first collections of Ukrainian children's literature in Canada. An editor of the newspaper Kanadiis’kyi farmer (1913–32, 1944–5), his editorials in 1917 were instrumental in the formation of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada.
