Shatulsky, Matthew

Shatulsky, Matthew [Шатульський, Матвій; Šatul's'kyj, Matvij], b 16 November 1883 in Bazaliia, Starokostiantyniv county, Volhynia gubernia, d 20 December 1952 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Communist activist and journalist. He emigrated to the United States (1909) and then to Canada (1911), where he became active in the workers’ organization Samoobrazovanie. He joined the staff of Ukraïns’ki robitnychi visty in 1920 and helped organize the Workers’ Benevolent Association. Together with Matthew Popovich and Ivan Navizivsky, he was a leading member of the Ukrainian Labour-Farmer Temple Association. In 1940–2 he was arrested under Defence of Canada regulations and kept in a detention camp. His articles, short stories, and feuilletons were collected by Peter Krawchuk and published with a biographical introduction in Siiach slova pravdy (Sower of the Word of Truth, 1983).
