Haievsky, Hryhorii

Haievsky, Hryhorii [Гаєвський, Григорій; Hajevs'kyj, Hryhorij], b 26 January 1872 in Tulchyn, Bratslav county, Podilia gubernia, d 28 May 1933 in Kyiv. Stage director and educator; father of Valentyn Haievsky. From 1904 he taught at the Lysenko Music and Drama School in Kyiv and later at the Kyiv State Art Institute and other higher schools. He directed plays at the Ukrainian National Theater in Kyiv (1917–18) and at the Mykhailychenko Theater in Kyiv in the 1920s. Among his published works are a study Zavdannia rezhysera (The Task of a Stage Director, 1920) and Ukrainian translations and adaptations of works by Somerset Maugham and Upton Sinclair.
