Maksymovych, Borys

Maksymovych, Borys [Максимович, Борис; Maksymovyč] aka Maximovich, b 18 June 1906 in Kyiv, 3 January 1994 in Detroit, Michigan. Concert pianist and teacher. He graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory (1928), where he studied under the virtuosi Simon Barere and Hryhorii Beklemishev, and then taught at the conservatory. A postwar émigré he appeared as solo pianist in Western Europe and the United States. His repertoire as soloist included Domenico Scarlatti, Ludwig van Beethoven, Fryderyk Chopin, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Igor Stravinsky. Maksymovych was noted for his performances of Peter Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in B-flat Minor. He also popularized the piano works of such Ukrainian composers as Mykola Lysenko, Lev Revutsky, and Viktor Kosenko.
