Zhuk, Serhii
Zhuk, Serhii [Жук, Сергій; Žuk, Serhij], b 19 October 1885 in Shvaikyna Balka, Kobeliaky county, Poltava gubernia, d 1 April 1969 in Augsburg, West Germany. Sculptor and writer. He became interested in painting and sculpting as a student at Saint Petersburg University and produced his first sculptures in 1907. In 1916 he founded the Ukrainian Literary and Artistic Society in Saint Petersburg. After returning to Kyiv in 1918, he taught art there and helped set up the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts. In the interwar period he produced many monuments and wrote poetry, stories, and reviews. In 1943 he moved to Lviv. He was a postwar refugee and displaced person in Vienna and Augsburg. Among his works are busts of Christ, Marko Kropyvnytsky, and Mariia Zankovetska.
