Zhovtobriukh, Mykhailo [Жовтобрюх, Михайло; Žovtobrjux, Myxajlo], b 17 November 1905 in Ruchky, Hadiach county, Poltava gubernia, d 16 December 1995 in Kyiv. Linguist. A graduate of the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of People's Education (1929), he worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1959 to 1988 and served as head of its Department of Ukrainian Language Theory and Structural-Mathematical Linguistics. He wrote over 300 works, including textbooks on modern Ukrainian (1949, 1961), a history of Ukrainian phonetics (1956), and books on the language of the Ukrainian press to the mid-1890s (doctoral dissertation, 1963) and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (1970) and on literary Ukrainian (1984). He is the coauthor of textbooks on the Ukrainian language (1st edn 1959) and Ukrainian historical grammar (1957, 1962) and of books on Ukrainian and Russian comparative grammar (1957, 1962, 1978), modern Ukrainian phonetics (1969) and vocabulary and phraseology (1973), modern Ukrainian morphology (1975), the syntax of the word group and the simple sentence (1975), the history of Ukrainian phonetics (1979), word formation in modern Ukrainian (1979), and the East Slavic languages (1987). He also edited a dictionary of Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s language (1978) and coedited a collection of 18th-century Ukrainian private letters (1987).
