Khmury, Vasyl

Khmury, Vasyl [Хмурий, Василь; Xmuryj, Vasyl'; real name: Бутенко; Butenko], b 8 February 1896 in Rashivka, Hadiach county, Poltava gubernia, d 27 January 1940 in Samara, RSFSR. Journalist; #art and #theater critic. A graduate of a teachers' seminary in Sorochyntsi, in the 1920s and 1930s he edited the journal Nove mystetstvo, worked in the Rukh publishing house in Kharkiv, and contributed articles on the theater, cinema, and art to the newspaper Visti VUTsVK and its weekly supplement #Kul’tura i pobut, and to the journals Chervonyi shliakh and Sil's'kyi teatr. He wrote the text to Anatol Petrytsky’s Teatral'ni stroï (#Theater Costumes, 1929) and a number of books: Notatky pro #teatr, #kino i prostorove mystetstvo (Notes on the #Theater, #Cinema, and Spatial #Art, 1930) and monographs on actors Yosyp Hirniak (1931) and Marian Krushelnytsky (1931). Khmury was arrested in 1937 and died in a #Soviet GULAG labor camp.
