Tsynkalovsky, Oleksander or Cynkałowski, Aleksander [Цинкаловський, Олександер; Cynkalovs'kyj], b 9 January 1898 in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, Volhynia gubernia, d 19 April 1983 in Cracow. Archeologist. After teaching gymnasium in Volodymyr-Volynskyi (1919–25), he studied at Warsaw University and then worked for museums in Warsaw, Lviv, and Kremianets. A member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, he cooperated with the society’s museum, the National Museum, and the Metropolitan’s Archives in Lviv. Before the Second World War he undertook many fruitful archeological digs in Volhynia and Polisia and gathered information about their history and geography. In 1944 he returned to Warsaw to work in an archeological museum, and in 1952 he moved to Cracow as a research associate of the Institute of Archeology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Although he could no longer continue his field work in Volhynia and Polisia, he was able to publish Materiały do pradziejów Wołynia i Polesia Wołyńskiego (Materials Concerning the Prehistory of Volhynia and Volhynian Polisia, 2 vols, 1961, 1963) in Poland. His Starovynni pam’iatky Volyni (Ancient Monuments of Volhynia, 1975) and Stara Volyn' i Volyns'ke Polissia (Old Volhynia and Volhynian Polisia, 2 vols, 1984, 1986), an encyclopedic guide to the geography and history of the region, were published in Canada by the Research Institute of Volyn. He wrote many scholarly articles during his career and contributed regularly to Ukrainian periodicals in Poland, including Nasha kul'tura, Ukraïns'kyi kalendar, and Tserkovnyi kalendar, under the pseudonym O. Volynets.
