Nyzhankivska, Melaniia

Nyzhankivska, Melaniia [Нижанківська, Меланія; Nyžankivs'ka, Melanija], b 7 March 1898 in Radivtsi, Bukovyna, d 1 June 1973 in Blaugies, Belgium. Writer; daughter of Illia Semaka. She lived in Prague and Lviv with her husband, Nestor Nyzhankivsky, who put many of her poems to music. After being imprisoned for several months in Prague by the NKVD at the end of the Second World War, she managed to emigrate to Belgium. She wrote a biographical novel Na zelenii Bukovyni (In Green Bukovyna) and stories and articles on literature and music in the postwar émigré press.
