Lysenko Music Society in Lviv

Lysenko Music Society in Lviv (Muzychne tovarystvo im. M. Lysenka u Lvovi). A society founded in 1903 to promote the development of Ukrainian music in Western Ukraine. Its original name, the Union of Song and Music Societies, was changed in 1907 to honor the work of Mykola Lysenko. The group's first president was Volodymyr Shukhevych. Other leaders included Vasyl Barvinsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych, and Nestor Nyzhankivsky. The society sponsored concerts, competitions, and the publication of music. Its most significant undertaking was the running of a music school that eventually developed into the Lysenko Higher Institute of Music.
