Mokrytsky, Yuvenalii

Mokrytsky, Yuvenalii or Mokryckyj, Juvenalij Josyf [Мокрицький, Ювеналій Йосиф], b 16 October 1911 in Khlonivka, Chortkiv county, Galicia, d 2 May 2002 in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. Icon painter. Mokrytsky become monk of the Studite Monastery in Univ in 1929 and received the Schema in 1934. He completed theological studies in Lviv and Prague (Charles University, 1940–43) and was ordained by Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky in 1943. Mokrytsky begun his training in icon painting under Vasyl Diadyniuk at the religious art school organized by Metropolitan Sheptytsky at the Univ Monastery. Later he continued his artistic schoolong in Lviv, Prague, and at the Vienna Acadamy of Fine Arts. For some time he also assisted Ilarion Svientsitsky with the work on the icon collection at Lviv’s National Museum. A displaced person after the Second World War, Mokrytsky resumed his art studies in Krefeld, Germany (1948), and then studied portraiture in Liège, Belgium (1950–54). He lectured on religious art at the Ukrainian Catholic University (Rome). Mokrytsky’s icons are painted in a Neo-Byzantine style, with elements of the Renaissance Ukrainian icon painting tradition. He created icons and iconostases for churches in Italy (including the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Rome, 1979), Germany, the United States of America, Australia, and the province of Ontario, Canada.
