Karanovych, Dariia

Karanovych, Dariia [Каранович, Дарія; Karanovyč, Darija], b 18 October 1908 in Kolomyia, Galicia, d 9 December 1999 in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Pianist and pedagogue; daughter of Yaroslav Hordynsky. She studied with Vasyl Barvinsky at the Lysenko Higher Institute of Music in Lviv, with P. Weingarten and E. von Sauer in Vienna, and with E. Steuermann at the Vienna Academy of Music. She gave concerts in Vienna, Lviv, Warsaw, Salzburg, Berlin, and Prague and played for Vienna and Salzburg radio. From 1953 she was teaching in New York at the Ukrainian Music Institute of America, of which she served as president (1967–70, 1983–99). Her extensive piano repertoire is rich in works of Ukrainian music. In 1985 she released a record of piano music by Ukrainian composers such as Mykola Lysenko, Barvinsky, Nestor Nyzhankivsky, and Lev Revutsky.
