Omelchenko, Petro [Омельченко, Петро; Omel'čenko], b 3 October 1894 in Khorol, Poltava gubernia, d 21 February 1952 in Villejuif, France. Artist; husband of Sofiia Zarytska. From 1920 an émigré in Poland and then Czechoslovakia, he studied painting at the Prague Academy of Arts (1923–8) and graphic art at the Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Arts in Prague. From 1928 he worked in Paris in various forms of printmaking and engraving on glass (see Glass, art). His work was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, at a show of the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists in Lviv (1932), and at a show of Ukrainian prints in Berlin (1933). While working as a laborer in France during the Second World War, he drew scenes of daily life. His graphic works are distinguished by precision and clear lines and often include Ukrainian themes. His monograph on paints, materials, and techniques was published in Kyiv in 1930.
